Local Attractions

Situated within a mile of Ashbourne, Derbyshire we're ideally positioned for trips to a variety of attractions of both historical and entertainment interest.

If you've come to see the beauty of the area you can't miss Chatsworth House and estate (left) less than half an hour away. Haddon Hall and the Market town of Bakewell (famous for Bakewell Pudding and Tarts!) is only five miles from Chatsworth. The start of the industrial revolution is well covered in the area with Arkwright's mills (one of which is now a very nice retail development at Cromford). There's also Matlock Bath just a short run away now featuring cable cars that will carry you right across the valley. Even closer to Stone Cottage is the ever popular Dovedale valley where the river Dove inspired Izaak Walton to write the legendary 'Compleat Angler' (infinitely superior to 'Fly Fishing' by J.R Hartley!!).
How about the thrills and spills of Alton Towers. Fifteen minutes from our door you can enjoy the big five - Nemesis, Corkscrew, Oblivion, Ripsaw and the Black Hole as well as whole host of other rides and entertainment. For those with younger children there is the somewhat tamer Gullivers Kingdom at nearby Matlock Bath.

Less than forty-five minutes away are the cities of Nottingam famous for it's lace industries. The potteries of Stoke-on-Trent are a similiar distance and there are a great number of factory shops where pottery and other ceramic goods can be bought at keen prices. Even closer is the city of Derby, home of the mighty Derby County F.C. Derby also has a thriving retail scene and the nightlife includes a fine collection of restaurants, theatres, clubs and pubs. Derby also can claim to be one of the few cities with two multiplex cinemas to it's name.

Closer to Stone Cottage, Ashbourne has several good restaurants and a great number of pubs. Within walking distance is the Royal Oak, recently refurbished the Oak is a good place to eat. Give it a try.
